Course Scheduling

5.2.1. Order of Scheduling

5.2.1.1. Generally

The Registrar's office builds any given semester's schedule with the following priorities:

  1. Existing classes
  2. Additional class requests

5.2.1.2. Existing & Additional Section Requests

Existing and additional academic class section requests are:

  1. Created by rolling (copying) the prior fall, spring, or summer semester to the upcoming fall, spring, or summer semester (respectively);
  2. Based on the initial proofing reports reviewed and submitted by departments;
  3. Processed on a first come first served, space available basis where requests cannot dislocate other courses from available space; and
  4. Based on room capacity.

5.2.2. Schedule

5.2.2.1. Distribution of Classes

Divisions should schedule 50% GE in the morning and 50% in the afternoon. Divisions should schedule non-GE classes the same way.

5.2.2.2. Standard Meeting Patterns

Standard Meeting Patterns for all classes are as follows:

  1. MWF: Every hour on the half-hour starting at 7:30am
  2. TR: Every ninety minutes starting at 8:00am:
    • 8:00am-9:15am
    • 9:30am-10:45am
    • 11:00am-12:15pm
    • 12:30pm-1:45pm
    • 2:00pm-3:15pm

Courses taught four or five days a week follow the MWF bell times.

Exceptions

To maximize space utilization, the following courses can follow a nonstandard bell schedule by starting on the hour or half-hour:

  1. PE courses taught in the Horne Activity Center
  2. Studio ART courses
  3. Private lesson MUSC courses
  4. One credit lab courses
  5. Courses that start after 2:30pm

5.2.2.3. Three Credit Classes

  1. Full Semester three credit classes will be taught MWF for 50 minutes or TR for 75 minutes.
  2. Full Semester three credit classes can only be taught off the MWF/TR schedule with permission of Deans Council.

5.2.2.4. General Education Courses

Departments can only remove a GE course from the schedule (even from the proposed schedule) with the approval of the Division Dean and the Office of Academic Affairs.

5.2.3. Modifying or Canceling Course Offerings

5.2.3.1 Modifying Course Offerings

All modifications to courses offered for a semester must take place at least twenty-one (21) days or three (3) weeks prior to the semester's start date. Only exigent circumstances allow exceptions to this rule. Modifications covered by this policy include changing professors, classrooms, times, meeting days, and start and end dates.

5.2.3.2. Canceling Offerings

Canceling course offerings must take place at least three (3) weeks prior to a semester’s start date. After the third week deadline, departments are responsible to teach the courses they advertised to students.

5.2.3.3. Exceptions to Canceling

Exceptions to rule 5.2.3.1 will be granted, with the approval of the Academic Vice President, when some unforeseen exigency occurs. Examples of these include, severe health problems, death of a faculty member, and an unforeseen retirement coupled with an inability to fill the position. Also, a course can be canceled with the same approval when the enrollment does not justify the class.

5.2.3.4. Notification

Departments that cancel a course after the third week deadline must take reasonable steps to notify all students registered for that course.

5.2.4. General Exceptions

5.2.4.1. Deans Council

Except where otherwise noted, the authority to grant general exceptions to these scheduling rules rests with Deans Council.
