Course Description
This course provides choral ensemble training in a variety of serious literature written for smaller vocal choirs. Students enrolling in this course are expected to participate in major music events within the department. Enrollment is by audition. This course is repeatable for credit.
Justification
This course is designed for the vocal student/vocal music major that wishes to perform more difficult literature in an auditioned group. Much historic choral literature, ensemble jazz and pop was written with smaller ensembles in mind. It is not suitable for larger choirs, nor is it within the abilities of non-auditioned groups to perform. All of the four-year colleges in the state and virtually all NASM accredited schools of music offer a similar performing group.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to accurately and artistically perform the music selected by the director.
- Upon successful completion of this course students students will be able to articulate the textual meanings of the compositions. Students will be able to paraphrase foreign language texts.
- Upon successful completion of this course students students will be able to articulate understanding of selected music in its historical setting including stylistic, expressive, and formal qualities associated with the relevant era of music history.
Course Content
Music will be chosen from all periods of music history at levels of difficulty within the ability of the current group. The skills of sight-singing and rhythmic reading will be taught through daily exercises and through rehearsal of the music. Proper vocal and choral techniques will be discussed and applied. Students will learn compositional forms and performance styles relevant to selected repertoire.
