Catalog Description: The primary focus of this course is to educate students on the attributes of an effective professional teacher and also introduces the field of Education. Opportunities for assessment of personal qualifications are provided through self-analysis, discussion and experience as an observer/aide for a minimum of 24 hours in public school classrooms. This course also includes discussions of the history of American education, and the roles of various professionals engaged in education.

Justification: This course is a required course for all education majors. It serves as an introduction to the career as a professional educator and is offered at each of the USHE sister institutions. It is a perquisite to most university teacher-education programs and recommended in others. It has a common course number with most colleges and universities in the State of Utah system. (Southern Utah University - EDUC 1010; University of Utah - EDU 1010; Utah State University - ELED 1010; Utah Valley University - EDEL 1010; Utah Tech University - EDUC 1010; Weber State University - EDUC 1010).


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to recognize and discuss the importance of the Utah Effective Teaching Standards in helping teachers be more effective in the classroom.  The outcome will be assessed through class discussion and lab observation.

Students will be able to understand the different roles within the field of Education as the expectation and responsibilities that teachers have.  This outcome will be assessed through class discussions and assignments.

Students will be able to identify instructional methods and teaching strategies utilized by teachers during their observations and be able to determine their effectiveness. This outcome will be assessed through the journal component of the final exam and reflections.

Students will gain the knowledge to utilize their resume building assignment to start creating a foundation for their professional career.  This outcome will be assessed through the presentation of their lab observations and reflections as well as class discussions.

Students will gain the foundational professional and pedagogical knowledge they will utilize throughout their education.  This outcome will be assessed through assignments and quizzes.


Content:
Conceptual topics would include, but are not limited to, the following: > The Profession of Education> The Purpose of Education> Ideas and Events That Have Shaped Education in the United States > Social Realities Confronting Today's Schools> Governance and Schools in the United States > Ethical and Legal Issues in Education in the United States > Teaching Diverse Learners > Addressing Learner's Individual Needs > Creating a Positive Classroom Environment> Developing and Implementing the Curriculum > Learning about Standards> Your First Teaching Position The lab portion of this class will include students having the opportunity to observe teachers in a real classroom dealing with real classroom situations and formulate ideas about classroom management, content delivery and the real world of teaching. Modern K-12 classrooms contain a variety of students in terms of backgrounds, economics, faiths, and languages among other things. Students will learn how to work with people of all types in order to be successful in educational settings.

Key Performance Indicators:
Specific key performance indicators will vary according to instructor preference. However, course grading policies will work within the following parameters:

Class attendance & participation, discussion, etc. 0 to 10%

Lab Observation/Journal 20 to 30%

Quizzes 5 to 10%

Assignments 25 to 40%

Presentations 20 to 30%

Reflections 5 to 15%

Pedagogy Statement:
This course is taught by class lecture, class discussion, written assignment, exam, and lab observations. This class provides students with a realistic, engaging, hands-on experiences, and academically informative introduction to the discipline of education.A classroom and the teaching that happens within should recognize and value the variety found within the students. This course will seek out sources of information from a variety of experts. This will provide students both a variety of different opinions but also make the course more welcoming to those of different backgrounds. Students will then be encouraged to add their own thoughts and to consider the needs of these different populations as they do so.
