Title: Cosmetology/Barbering Clinical I

Catalog Description: In the Cosmetology/Barbering Clinical I course, students begin to provide salon services in the clinical setting. This course provides practical experience and learning in a real salon setting. Students perform the services learned in previous courses on clients. This course helps prepare students for client work and building a clientele.

Justification: This is a course required by the State Cosmetology Board to prepare students for further in-depth study in cosmetology/barbering theory and practices. It is also required before students are authorized to work in a laboratory setting or with patrons.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will maintain a clean work environment and follow the proper procedures for safety and infection control Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets for safety and sanitation and practical applications, quizzes, exams, and/or participation.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices related to barbering skills; i.e. general hair care, men's styling, barber cuts, straight razor shaves, beard trimming and design, facials, and nail care. Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets for safety and sanitation and practical applications, quizzes, exams, and/or participation.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices related to cosmetology skills; i.e. general hair care, styling, haircutting, chemical texture, skin and nail care, and the proper application of color. Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets for safety and sanitation and practical applications, quizzes, exams, and/or participation.

Students will demonstrate his or her understanding of the process of communication. Evaluating client needs and the action required to produce client expectations. Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets for safety and sanitation and practical applications, quizzes, exams, and/or participation.


Content:
This course aims to do the following:• Demonstrate salon processes and etiquette.• Teach students how to communicate effectively with salon guests and coworkers.• Demonstrate sanitation procedures necessary for the health & safety of clients and self.• Perform cosmetology services on public guests.• Demonstrate other theories, practical applications, and procedures associated with the Cosmetology/Barbering clinical floor.Snow College welcomes and supports all students, employees, and guests. Pedagogy Statement:
Teaching methods may include demonstration, class discussion, practical application, group work, and the incorporation of low-stakes assignments.In this course, instructors will strive to connect with students on a personal level by spending multiple hours daily with this group of students. Students will also be encouraged to make connections in order to foster an inclusive classroom atmosphere. This may be accomplished through group assignments such as students role-playing the client and student experience as they practice learned skills such as straight razor shaving, clipper haircutting, and client consultation. Students will rotate until everyone has had the opportunity to work together.
