Catalog Description: The Esthetics and Nail Basics course presents basic esthetic and nail service practices, theory, instruction, demonstrations of technical procedures, and practical application of cosmetology esthetic skills. Students learn hair removal, facials, and makeup procedures. Students also learn how to perform manicures, pedicures, gel polishes, nail care, and nail enhancements. Students demonstrate competency with assignments, tests, and practical skills.

Justification: This is a course required by the State Cosmetology Board to prepare students for further in-depth study in cosmetology/barbering theory and practices. It is also required before students are authorized to work in a laboratory setting or with patrons.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices related to facials, pedicures, and nail care by covering related theory chapters. Students will also cover theory chapters related to skin and nail diseases and disorders and understand the differences between diseases and disorders Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets for safety and sanitation and practical applications, written assignments, client services feedback, exams, and/or attendance.

Students will maintain a clean work environment and follow the proper procedures for safety and infection control. Students will recognize potential safety hazards and implement accepted methods to mitigate those hazards.  Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets for safety and sanitation and practical applications, written assignments, client services feedback, exams, and/or attendance.

Students will be able to evaluate and communicate client needs, determine the action needed, maintain client records, and use professional ethics relevant to the salon business. Students will be assessed as they perform a client consultation at the beginning of each service. The outcome of the service is determined by a satisfied client. Instructors check work, give feedback, and make any correction at the time of the service. Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets for safety and sanitation and practical applications, written assignments, client services feedback, exams, and/or attendance.

Students will learn to analyze skin including recognizing and describing various contraindications for facial and hair removal services.Students will also learn different facial treatments including galvanic, heat lamps, high frequency, facial packs, facial masks, limited aroma therapy, and limited exfoliation. Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets for safety and sanitation and practical applications, written assignments, client services feedback, exams, and/or attendance.


Content:
This course aims to do the following:• Analyze skin including recognizing and describing various contraindications for facial and hair removal services.• Explain facial treatments including galvanic, heat lamps, high frequency, facial packs, facial masks, limited aroma therapy, and limited exfoliation.• Demonstrate proper facial services and how to apply facial treatments.• Describe limited exfoliation applications and techniques to include re-exfoliation, post-exfoliation consultation considerations, and chemical reactions.• Demonstrate massage techniques for the face and neck and basic facial services.• Demonstrate temporary hair removal techniques typically used in the salon.• Perform or explain the procedures for artificial eyelash applications, arching of the eyebrows, and tinting of the eyelashes and eyebrows.• Explain and demonstrate correct sanitation procedures for hand and foot nail care.• Demonstrate proper manicure and pedicure procedures.• Perform proper UV gel procedures.• Describe the procedure for applying acrylic nail enhancements.• Demonstrate and learn practical applications while working on course-related content.• Demonstrate and explain other theories, practical applications, and procedures associated with esthetics and nail basics.Snow College welcomes and supports all students, employees, and guests. Pedagogy Statement:
Teaching methods may include group work, practical application, hands-on experiences, and the incorporation of low-stakes assignments.In this course, instructors will strive to connect with students on a personal level by spending multiple hours daily with this group of students. This course also offers hands-on experience in manicuring, pedicuring, massage, facials, facial makeup, and removal of unwanted hair by tweezing and waxing. Students will also be encouraged to make connections in order to foster an inclusive classroom/lab atmosphere. This may be accomplished through group assignments, experience gained at the front desk, practical experience with clients as they perform client services, and all the procedures involved in the beauty industry.
