Title: Barbering Basics

Catalog Description: The Barbering Basics course covers barbering theory for the following subjects: history of barbering, tools and equipment, professional straight razor shaves, facial hair design, and haircutting and styling techniques for short hair. With instructions, students perform demonstrations and practical applications for each subject. Students demonstrate competency through assignments, testing, and practical applications.

Justification: This is a course required by the State Cosmetology Board to prepare students for further in-depth study in cosmetology/barbering theory and practices. It is also required before students are authorized to work in a laboratory setting or with patrons.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will maintain a clean work environment and follow the proper procedures for safety and infection control. Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets, hands-on applications, participation, quizzes, and/or exams.


Students will demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices related to barbering skills; i.e. general hair care, men's styling, barber cuts, straight razor shaves, beard trimming and design, facials, and nail care.  Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets, hands-on applications, participation, quizzes, and/or exams.

Students will demonstrate his or her understanding of the process of communication. Evaluating clients' needs and the action required to meet clients' expectations. Students will be assessed using skill pass-off sheets, hands-on applications, participation, quizzes, and/or exams.


Content:
This course will cover the following:• The history of barbering including modern tools and implements used by barbers today.• Proper safety and sanitation procedures.• Barbering skills related to facial hair design, haircutting and styling for short hair, and straight razor shaving services.• The proper use of clippers, scissors, straight-blade razors, and other barbering implements.• Practical applications while working on course-related content.• Other theories, practical applications, and procedures associated with barbering basics.Snow College welcomes and supports all students, employees, and guests. Pedagogy Statement:
Teaching methods may include demonstration, class discussion, practical application, group work, and the incorporation of low-stakes assignments.

In this course, instructors will strive to connect with students on a personal level by spending multiple hours daily with this group of students. Students will also be encouraged to make connections in order to foster an inclusive classroom atmosphere. This may be accomplished through group assignments such as students role-playing the client and student experience as they practice learned skills such as straight razor shaving, clipper haircutting and client consultation. Students will rotate until everyone has had the opportunity to work together.
