Title: Cosmetology/Barbering/Hair Design Basics

Catalog Description: The Cosmetology/Barbering/Hair Design Basics course presents basic cosmetology practices, demonstrations of technical procedures, and practical application of cosmetology skills. Students learn the basics of infection control with safety and sanitation; properties of the hair and scalp; principles of hair design; shampooing, conditioning, draping, hair and scalp treatments, haircutting; hairstyling and to identify the responsibilities of the cosmetologist. Critical thinking skills are also developed.Students demonstrate competency through assignments testing and practical applications. This course is part of a required series to prepare students to take the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology Licensure Examination (NIC test).

Justification: This is a prerequisite course required by the State Cosmetology Board to prepare students for further in-depth study in cosmetology/barbering theory and practices. It is also required before students are authorized to work in a laboratory setting or with patrons.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will list safety precautions to follow during all client services, explain hazardous material safety procedures and will identify the principles of prevention. Students will be assessed through assignments, hands-on applications, participation, quizzes, and/or exams.

Students will understand the basic theory of hair structure, nail and skin care, haircutting, hairstyling, and the chemistry of hair color and chemical texture services. Students will be assessed through assignments, hands-on applications, participation, quizzes, and/or exams.

Students will be able to use the appropriate tools and methods to perform services related to the cosmetology/barbering profession.  Students will be assessed through assignments, hands-on applications, participation, quizzes, and/or exams.


Content:
This course aims to do the following: - Explain and demonstrate the differences between cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing salon tools, implements, and salon equipment - Teach proper techniques for shampooing, draping, and scalp treatments - Teach different types of hairstyling techniques, including wet and thermal styling - Teach the basics of haircutting - Teach and explain other theories, practical applications, and procedures associated with Cosmetology/Hair design basics - Teach practical applications while working on course-related contentSnow College welcomes and supports all students, employees, and guests. Pedagogy Statement:
Teaching methods may include demonstration, class discussion, practical application, group work, and the incorporation of low-stakes assignments.

In this course, instructors will strive to connect with students on a personal level by spending multiple hours daily with this group of students. Students will also be encouraged to make connections in order to foster an inclusive classroom atmosphere. This may be accomplished through group assignments such as students role-playing the client and student experience as they practice learned skills such as straight razor shaving, clipper haircutting and client consultation. Students will rotate until everyone has had the opportunity to work together.
